Glee Brechler from James Madison Memorial High School Honored as 2017 Wisconsin ProStart Teacher of the Year
(Madison, WI) The Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation announced today that Glee Brechler, Family and Consumer Education Teacher at James Madison Memorial High School in Madison, is the Wisconsin 2017 ProStart® Teacher of the Year. The award recognizes an exceptional educator in Wisconsin who utilizes the ProStart program in his or her classroom.
The ProStart program, administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and state restaurant associations, is a curriculum designed to teach high school students the skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Students also have the opportunity to participate in paid jobs where industry managers mentor them. When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies and participate in at least 400 hours of a mentored work experience, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce.
Brechler has been a strong advocate for the ProStart program for many years, using her experience in the restaurant industry to forge community connections and bring unique experiences to her students both in and out of the classroom.
She successfully completed all levels of the NRAEF’s ProStart Summer Institutes and is a regular participant at the Wisconsin ProStart Teacher Trainings. She is always seeking professional development opportunities in order to be the best and most effective educator she can be.
In 2015, Brechler’s students took first place at the Wisconsin ProStart Invitational culinary competition and went on to represent Wisconsin at the National ProStart Invitational in Anaheim, California.
“Her enthusiasm for the restaurant industry and her students is truly unmatched and shows in her successes both in and out of the classroom,” said Alex Newman, ProStart Coordinator for the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation. “It is this dedication to her students and the restaurant industry that prove Glee Brechler as not only an outstanding teacher, but a passionate supporter and advocate of education, student career development and the restaurant industry.”
As Wisconsin’s ProStart Teacher of the Year, Brechler may also be nominated to be a finalist for national awards given by the NRAEF.
With national and local support from industry members, educators, the NRAEF and state restaurant associations, ProStart reaches 95,000 students nationwide. The ProStart program in Wisconsin reaches over 6,500 students. For more information on the ProStart program, visit www.chooserestaurants.org.
