WRA Education Foundation Receives $16,700 Grant from National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation
The Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) Education Foundation received $16,700 in funding from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation as part of the 2014 ProStart® Program Support Fund Distribution Program. The fund distribution is designed to sustain, strengthen and enhance state-level ProStart® programs and back activities related to supporting students and educators at the high school level.
The WRA Education Foundation will use the award to help fund family and consumer education in Wisconsin schools, promote ProStart exam administration and the ProStart Certificate of Achievement, support the Wisconsin State ProStart Invitational culinary and management competitions for high school students and generate program communications and community awareness of the ProStart program. The WRA Education Foundation would like to thank the NRAEF for their support in advancing the Wisconsin ProStart program.
The Wisconsin ProStart program, made possible by a partnership between the NRAEF and the WRA Education Foundation, is a two-year curriculum designed to teach high school students the skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Students also have the opportunity to participate in paid internships where industry managers mentor them. When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies, and participate in at least 400 hours of a mentored work experience, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce.
Wisconsin was one of the first states in the county to pilot and implement a ProStart program and currently has 4,400 students participating in the program at 90 schools throughout the state.
